“You've got to find what you love,' Jobs says
This is a prepared text of the Commencement address delivered by Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple Computer and of Pixar Animation Studios, on June 12, 2005.
Steve Jobs’ 2005 Stanford Commencement Speech was very thoughtful for anyone who needs some inspiration in life. It is considered an effective speech because of his use of rhetorical devices such as pathos, epistrophe, antithesis, Kairos, and warrant. His rhetorical approach is not the only thing that makes this speech one of the most successful. He is able to relate to the audience, and to relax them with humor and laid-back grace. By the end of the speech, he connected well with audience, and they had a better understanding of who Steve Jobs actually is, and who Steve Jobs was becoming. Steve Jobs uses his background and upbringing to play upon his rhetorical approach. Throughout the speech, Jobs’ tells of three stories about his personal life experiences in which he found motivation. Firstly, he talked about pursuing what you love and believing that all the efforts will eventually form meaningful pictures in the future. In his second story, he emphasized the importance of finding what you are enthusiastic about. Once you find your passion, you should stick to it and don’t let discouragement and obstacles divert your path. By telling a third story about his near-death experience, he encouraged people to live every day wholeheartedly by following what you love. At the end of his speech, he encouraged the graduates to “stay hungry, stay foolish”, which means to pursue your inner passion and never stop Learning.
Steve Jobs is considered one of the most successful figures in the high-tech industry. His career is not smooth in many senses: a drop-out from a university, getting fired by his own company and nearly killed by cancer. Nevertheless, his determination and knowing what he loves helped him conquer obstacles in life. The key message in his speech was to find out what you love and do what you love every day. He himself discovered his enthusiasm when he was young and kept listening to his heart every day. Many people, however, find it difficult to figure out what they really love throughout their lives. Some may suffer from financial difficulties and others may never think of the question.
